Michelle Pfeiffer Launches Henry Rose Collection of Fine Fragrances

First Fine Fragrance line to be EWG VERIFIED®

WASHINGTON – Today Michelle Pfeiffer launched Henry Rose, a new collection of five distinct scents that meets the Environmental Working Group’s rigorous criteria for health, ingredient disclosure and transparency. This is the first fine fragrance line to earn the EWG VERIFIED™ mark.

Fragrance can be concocted from any number of the almost 4,000 stock chemical ingredients used by the industry, the blend of which is almost always kept hidden from the consumer. The Henry Rose line discloses 100 percent of its ingredients, setting a new industry standard for transparency in fine fragrance.

“Earning the EWG VERIFIED mark isn’t easy, as anyone who has read our exacting criteria can attest,” said EWG President Ken Cook. “We are thrilled to add a fine fragrance to the growing list of EWG VERIFIED products. These scents prove that fragrance companies are capable of disclosing all of their ingredients.”

EWG VERIFIED products must be free of substances EWG has put on its list of unacceptable ingredients – those that have been banned or restricted by the U.S. or international government agencies or other authoritative public health bodies, such as the World Health Organization. Companies must also fully disclose their products’ ingredients, including the specific ingredients that make up their fragrance mixtures, and follow good manufacturing practices.

More than a decade ago, Pfeiffer struggled to find a fragrance that didn’t feel like a compromise between quality and safety. When she couldn’t, she stopped wearing fragrance altogether, but found she missed it. This led Pfeiffer, a member of EWG’s board of directors, to develop a fine fragrance line based on the strictest health standards that could compete with other premium products on the market.

“More than one seasoned professional in personal care has told me that an EWG VERIFIED fine fragrance ‘is impossible.' Well, Michelle Pfeiffer has done the impossible. And her accomplishment sends a clear signal to the personal care industry. If a fine fragrance can be made to meet EWG’s rigorous standards for transparency and health, products in every category of personal care can meet our ‘clean beauty’ standard, too,” said Cook.

For more than a decade, EWG has been at the forefront of chemical ingredient disclosure in personal care products, believing that people have the right to know what is in the products they purchase and use every day. The EWG VERIFIED program was created to fill the void left by our nation’s antiquated law regulating the cosmetics and personal care products industry, which allows products to enter the marketplace without any testing to show that they are safe.

“We’re making it easy for consumers to find personal care products that meet our rigorous health and transparency standards – keeping shoppers in the know about what’s really in their products,” said Nneka Leiba, director of EWG’s Healthy Living Science program. “Our mark gives consumers peace of mind as they try to avoid toxic and potentially harmful chemicals.”

EWG VERIFIED products also include cosmetics such as foundations, blushes, eye shadows, eyeliners, lipsticks and lip glosses; skin care products such as lotions and moisturizers; shampoos and soaps; and many more personal care products.

EWG VERIFIED products must:

  • be free of EWG’s ingredients of concern.
  • fully disclose all ingredients on the label.
  • be produced with the best manufacturing practices.
