Statement on Keystone XL Pipeline Assessment

EWG Executive Director Heather White released the following statement today on the U.S. Department of State’s Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement on the Keystone XL pipeline permit:

We are deeply disappointed in the State Department’s Final Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement. The facts are clear: The planned Keystone XL pipeline will pump millions of tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, and its construction will release hazardous air pollutants and dangerous particulate matter.

The State Department’s calculations purport to show that the Keystone XL pipeline will be better for the climate and the environment than the alternative of "taking no action," but this is only because they failed to address the real alternative – investing in renewable energy and energy efficiency. What we need is real leadership, not simply accepting the status quo.
