Why so grim?
It was the day the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced its decision to allow Arctic ® apples to be sold in the U.S. They are among the first GMO whole foods to reach the American market.
Genetically engineered to resist browning, the new apple varieties soured the taste of a once iconic staple.
Since U.S. law does not require that GMO foods be labeled, shoppers can’t tell the new apple varieties from traditional ones.
We at EWG believe that Americans have the right to know how their food is produced.
Legislative efforts to require mandatory GMO labeling are well underway in the new Congress. Last week, Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) and Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.) introduced a bill known as the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act. It would direct the Food and Drug Administration to require such labels.
