Is Internship: 

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) is a fast-paced, innovative nonprofit seeking an organized, motivated individual to join our Washington, D.C. office. Our mission is to use the power of information to protect human health and the environment.

The copy editor assists the Editor in Chief and the communications and digital and marketing teams with editing materials including articles, reports, press releases, emails and web content. This is a full-time position that interacts with staff at all levels of the organization across many states.

  • Copy editing and fact checking a wide variety of materials, ranging from articles to database copy, and fundraising emails to technical comments
  • Identifying inconsistencies or errors
  • Attaining a deep understanding of toxics, agriculture, food and other key EWG issues to facilitate editing
  • Working with Editor in Chief to ensure quality and engaging copy for multiple EWG audiences
  • Meeting daily publishing deadlines, no matter what else is thrown your way
  • Writing/editing copy for:
  • Working across teams to modify past EWG publications as the team sees fit
  • Writing and editing headlines
  • Occasionally editing articles and press releases for substance and structure
  • Maintaining and periodically updating EWG Style Guide
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent)
  • Demonstrated commitment to the environment and public health issues (strongly preferred)
  • Minimum 1-2 years relevant work experience
  • Must meet deadlines and have strong prioritization and time management skills
  • Excellent communicator with strong attention to detail
  • Strong grasp of AP Style
  • Excellent command of grammar and spelling
  • CMS and web experience
  • Familiarity and interest in keeping up with social media and news
  • Experience writing tight clean copy
  • Computer literacy (Internet, Excel, Word, and Outlook) and familiarity with Macs
  • Sense of humor a plus
